Frits is the head of the Scientific Visualisation research group, which he started in 1990 with work on volume rendering and flow visualisation, later initiating research in the fields of feature-based visualisation, medical imaging, virtual reality and 3D interaction techniques.
So far, five PhD degrees in visualisation have been awarded under his expert guidance and several more are looming ahead. He started the first university course in visualization in Europe in 1993 and has taught several tutorials at international conferences. He also works for professional organisations such as the Eurographics Association, helps with organising conferences and is an editor of computer graphics journals.
