A large body of research that informs the design of mediated spaces thus concerns the concept of presence. In effect, an often-referred-to definition of (tele-)presence includes a reference to architectural design: ‘the use of technology to establish a sense of shared presence or shared space among geographically separated members of a group’. (Buxton 1992)[6] To date, however, an architectural design perspective has been lacking in presence research. My research shows that presence research is characterized by sharp disciplinary boundaries and identifies a conceptual gap: presence research typically fails to integrate aesthetic concepts that can be drawn from architecture and related visual practices.
